Thrifting 101

Thrifting 101

What is thrifting?
Buying gently used outfits from a thrift store, garage sale, or flea market at a discounted price is called thrifting.
Early thrifting started in the 1920s, a period of time with one of the first clothing waste epidemics. Charity businesses such as the salvation army helped destigmatize thrifting and became a cheaper alternative to buying first-hand clothing. As time passed, thrifting has become more of a staple practice worldwide.

When did it become popular?
In late 2016 and early 2017, many influencers on YouTube and Instagram started promoting thrifting by showcasing their thrifting finds. The promotion done by these influencers started the bloom of thrifting as a trend.
Many celebrities joined in on promoting thrifting when they were seen shopping at thrift stores. This action from renowned faces helped promote thrifting to the next level.
Many thrift stores and consignment stores gained popularity when people started to swap tips on how to find designer-quality items for a low price.

Thrifting opens the door to many vintage outfits that are one of a kind. You can curate a unique look altogether by adding thrift sourcedthrift-sourced garments to your wardrobe. Since the garments found at thrift stores are of high quality, and most of them are timeless you can find the perfect fits for you at a very reasonable price.

Find your next DIY project
If you are a fashion enthusiast who likes to curate your own styles, thrift stores can act as the perfect place to source materials for your next DIY project. You can get good quality outfits that you can modify or dye to your preference.

Thrifting not only provides great deals but also acts as a means to support and help the community around you.
