Capsule Clothing 101

Capsule Clothing 101

If you’re someone who’s conscious about the world of fashion, then you would have heard the term, ‘capsule clothing’. This blog will help you understand the concept, and the idea behind capsule clothing. Let’s start with the simple question 'What is capsule clothing/wardrobe?'

A compilation of a set of core outfits that can be paired well with other pieces from the same collection are called a capsule. Footwear and accessories that go well with the multiple combinations of the outfits can also be clubbed into a capsule. The ideology of capsule clothing is to primarily have a wardrobe that is efficient with a limited requirement of outfits that can pair well with other pieces, thereby decreasing the amount of time required to pick your outfit for the day.

The idea of having a minimalist approach to your everyday styling, by creating a set of outfits that provide you a versatile combination of ensembles was introduced around five decades ago and was made popular through the efforts of Ms. Donna Karan, who showcased a line of capsule clothing called ‘seven easy pieces’ in 1985. This collection broke the traditional conceptualization of fashion and laid down the path for minimalist style of clothing, that’s currently on the rise.

Now that you have a basic understanding of what capsule clothing is, let's address the next big question. Why follow capsule fashion?

Capsule clothing has its own perks. You can save a lot of time, both while getting ready and while shopping for outfits. The style of a capsule is set by you, to reflect your own. Buying new outfits for your capsule will be less time consuming as you already know what it is that you are looking for. This narrows down your search and makes the whole process a lot faster; and getting ready will be done in a breeze as every piece in your capsule compliments others from the set.

With global warming and environmental pollution reaching critical levels, the call to lead a sustainable lifestyle is now louder than ever. Fashion industry alone contributes to about 10% of global greenhouse gas emission. Over-consumption of fashion and the ever changing need to keep up with trends has caused a severe imbalance in nature. Having a capsule wardrobe is a great way to kick-start your journey through slow fashion, as the best way to minimize textile waste is by buying less and being conscious while doing so.

All about capsule clothing

Now the questions of what? and why? have been answered, let's move on to how?

How to get started with your own capsule wardrobe?

Step 1 - Get your style right.

Think about your personal style and fix on the right mix. Do your professional and personal styles overlap? Do you need separate capsules for both? Casuals / streetwear, formals etc.

Step 2 - Get the hues that match your style

Think about the colors that you wear often. Vibrant combinations, neutral/pastel palettes, some accent colors to complement them. Make sure you’ve got a definite palette in mind for your wardrobe.

Step 3 - Get the clothing mix right

Think about the different types of clothing in your closet. What are your staples? Do you use a lot of layering or accent clothing? It’s best to boil it down to the four main types: Everyday core, dressy outfits, outerwear layering, and accessories. Within each of these types, try to keep just about 4-5 options that complement the other pieces well.

Step 4 - Get your journey started in the world of slow fashion

You now have your very own capsule wardrobe. You can be part of the solution by focusing on maintaining just one or two capsules for the next 2 months.
